.Shinning and sev7n

 The shining.

Theme, genre, characters, setting and time or place. 

Contrast on visuals and sound cause juxtaposition.

The further away from civilisation the character is, it seems ‘help’ is less and less 

likely to arrive if needed. 

The shinning opening title screen is very well directed, as it creates a sense of 

loneliness and sad feeling, 

this is well done as the scenery is very beautiful through the skiing mountains and 

windy forest lanes. 

This is great juxtaposition as its one extreme to The other, beautiful landscape and 

yet lonely and 

Depressed feeling creates a real sense in which the movie carries throughout. That it 

is too quiet, unlike 

the music as its really loud but the scenery is quiet.

The scenic view really adds to the lonesome feeling that this title card scenes are 

giving off. This is also 

done by the almost motion sickness of the helicopter in which is filming these scenes, especially when the 

helicopter swoops past the car, it seems as if the helicopter is racing the car tho it 

swerves off to the 

side of the car building some tension up. 

The shot of the cars flying past the other way or almost abandoned on The other side of road gives 

An eerie vibe as if a subtle warning about the hotel that he is going to work at.

This is then more so added on when we first see the ominous building almost crammed into the side of the 

Mountain, this is not only because of the way in which it is built but also the gloomy grey colour.

 

Sev7n opening title scene is very different to that of the shinning as it starts off with some macabre and 

Quite grim images of the unknown character’s fingers where he seems to be chopping off the end of his 

finger so his prints are removed we know he has done this before as all his other fingers are bandaged up. 

There are also some gruesome photos of a man having his head drilled in the opening sequence.

This is quite a weird and un-used way of starting a movie as it’s nothing that is Terry flying its all jus quite 

disgusting and dirty, paired with the awful erratic music this creates quite a jumble of emotions 

At the beginning of the movie thus setting us up for a cliff hanger if you have not seen it before, as you do 

not know what to expect from the movie which leaves many horrible thoughts in your minds.

Thus making the movie beginning more meaningful and have an actual reason for it to be there 

But not only that it means , it gives the character a ominous ‘shadow’ as it put all those 

gruesome images in our mind paired with him. 

 

In comparison the two movies have a very similar feeling as they both seem as if something is 

wrong, tho the shinning represents it in a very different subtle way as sev7n does not with erratic 

uncomforting music and with shinning it is a beautyful and elegant setting but with a dark and 

Cruel feeling behind it. Shinning and sev7n both do not show any charecters but yet portray 

them by showing different things such as the cutting of the finger prints or the lonesome car 

giving us a sense of what they are like before we have met them.

Editing : fast paced, flicking from one thing to another, eye line match, shirts all folded neatly and in 

uniform shape, synced to the music the fast pace changing shots, effy montage, 

Sound : non diegetic, upbeat soundtrack, diegetic loud music, different music to what tony usually listens 

too as his room suggests other wise, music is synced to the shouting of the dad, sound bridge as bathroom 

door is being hit as we are still seeing effy, 

Mise en scene : underwear, boring white, cold emotionless, routine as he has an alarm and he springs out 

of bed as if he is use to it, mirrors, sign of ok for effy to come into the house, the dad looks like a stroppy 

teenager rather than the leader in the house, whereas the teenagers look in control, his shoulders are 

slumped over like a small sulky child, dad slams the door as he strops out the room, as soon as the dad 

leaves he stops the music, then the quietness of the day comes back as the dad has gone.

a child, as Tony is helping his sister sneak back into the house by disguising her footsteps with heavy 

metal music. 

Step 2

The establishing shot opens with a close up of the dad viscously but uselessly screaming at his son with a 

close up of the dads side profile, this is then shifted to a shot of an over shoulder view looking at Tony 

pretending to be useless with the speaker, there is then a master shot of the dad as it slowly focuses more 

and more on how he is slumped, this shot of the dads face as an close up is done in a way so it creates a 

sense of annoyance towards his son as his mouth is fully open gaping and screaming at his son this 

then cuts to Tony who is completely unfazed by this as if he is use to it, tho we already know he is as his 

dad exclaims “every fucking morning” showing that it happens every day, thus showing his dad is not 

only useless but also very gullible as he keeps falling for the same trick as suggested by the context.
